#9 Hua Tian loses his footing

It is the morning of the 11th. At Beas River Olympic Venue in Hong Kong Olympic eventing’s most dangerous phase, the cross country, is underway. But this time it is different. The Chinese spectators’ cameras are not trained on the foreign competitors but on a young man called ‘Hua Tian’, the first Chinese competitor ever to ride into an Olympic arena. As Hua Tian rides Chico calmly over each fence cheers go up in English: “Come on Hua Tian!”  This is the first Olympics that the Chinese Equestrian Team has competed at. Although he is not able to complete - Hua Tian misses his stride into Fence 8, falls and is eliminated- but we can say that every stride he took and every fence he cleared was a bonus, filling in China’s ‘blank sheet’ in this sport. We can also say: “See you in the London Olympics!”
