Barroca D'Alva is a fabulous competition which takes place in a beautiful Portuguese country setting just a short drive across the bay from Lisbon. The two weeks of FEI competitions run in the warm Portuguese sun, while the rest of Europe is still not emerging from winter. Warm Portuguese hospitality, traditional cooking (including a bakery onsite), wild partying, a chance for the brave to 'bull-fight' with the young bullocks all make for one of Europe's most colourful events.  Thrills and spills at Barroca in 2008.

Alex took ESB Irish Fiddle and Furst Love to Barroca D'Alva for some excitement and sun - the first step in the Olympic qualification campaign!  They had a very successful two weeks: Read about: Starting the season in style and Second week was even better.

Hambleden's courses are designed to make the most of the natural features of the Estate's beautiful woodland and parkland. The Domesday book of 1086 lists Queen Matilda as the first owner of the manor of Hambleden, and the Earl of Sunderland built the manor house in 1603. The ownership of Hambleden and the neighbouring Greenlands estate then passed through a number of families until W H Smith MP, who had bought Greenlands in 1871, purchased the Hambleden estate and manor house in 1923, and chose to take its name,Viscount Hambleden. The feature films 101 Dalmatians, Sleepy Hollow and The Avengers were shot here. Television productions include A Village Affair, Midsomer Murders, Daniel Deronda and Pollyanna and Down to Earth (with Hambleden masquerading as Devon). Map

Longleat International has always been one of the most eventful events for Alex. Set in the stunning grounds of the Longleat Estate, Alex's talented but difficult first horse, Monkey, always took the mickey at this event, whether it was the proximity of the lions, the smell of the giraffes, the sound of the seals, or whether it was just the right time in the season to throw a spanner into the works, that is what he always did without fail, year after year.  Map
